Mario continues to show improvement with his nippling (bottle feeding) skills. Except for his 3am feed today, for which he was completely asleep, he took a partial feed by bottle for all of his feeds. That's 7 out of 8 feeds! He took a full bottle for one of them and for several took about half. For the 3pm feed I breastfed him for 20 minutes and then, because he was still alert and rooting around, I gave him a bottle and he took about half of it by bottle before we gave him the rest through his tube.
Today his feeding pump was discontinued so that he now gets whatever he doesn't take by bottle via gravity feed through his tube. His feed amount also went up so that he is now getting 45mL/feeding.
Mario had his hearing test today and passed in both ears. He will have a follow up test in 3-4 months after discharge, just to make sure everything is still ok. They do the follow up because the antibiotics he was on right after birth can stay in the inner ear for a while. However, the risk that any damage was done is very slim and the audiologist explained that they are just extremely cautious and have us bring him back for the recheck.
Tonight his weight was up yet again. He is now up to 5lbs, 3.6oz, that's a gain of 2.4oz since last night.
So, today was another really positive day for our little man. We're getting closer and closer to the day we can bring him home. Though, I think more than one nurse will miss him when he's no longer there ;)
