Mario continues to do well with everything. He is consistently taking full feeds by bottle and they have started adding a little more to his bottles. His last two bottles this afternoon were 52mL and he takes them without issue. He is also well under the 20 minute time that they like him to take the bottles in. In fact, overnight he even took one in 5 minutes. That's my little piggy boy! We continue to do 6 feeds by bottle and 2 full breastfeeds per day and that is definitely agreeing with him.
His weight was up tonight to 5lbs, 12.2oz. That's a gain of 1.4oz from last night.
Today we scheduled his eye exam. Every infant who is born weighing less than 1500 grams and/or before 32 weeks gestational age has an eye exam at 6 weeks old. Mario weighed 1775 grams at birth, but was only 31 weeks gestational age. So, Mario's eye exam is scheduled for Feb 12 at Children's Hospital. Basically, it's just to check and make sure everything is ok with his eyes. There is no indication at this time that there is anything wrong, it's just a routine thing, like his hearing test was.
We also set up our date to room in. Dom and I will be rooming in on Saturday night. I'm sure we won't get much sleep, but it will be nice to be with the little man for that long and have him out of the NICU and under our care, for the most part (usually the nurse will come in once or twice just to check and see how things are going, take vitals, etc).
Today, Mario got his Synagis vaccine to help protect him against RSV. He will get this monthly until age 2 during RSV season, which is from November - April in this area. You can read more about it by clicking the link (click the word Synagis in the first sentence of this paragraph).
He also got to ditch one of his monitor leads today, the pulse oximeter (the one that measures his oxygen saturation level). His oxygen saturation rates have been stable for several days, so they no longer need to monitor this all the time. He will have it put back on for his car seat challenge, but that should be the only time he'd need it again. This is definitely a good sign! It is very nice to have one less cord to deal with. He will keep the other leads, the ones that measure heart rate and respiration rate, the whole time he is in the NICU (that's just standard protocol).
We are definitely moving closer and closer to the end of his stay in the NICU. It won't be long now!
